The integration of keyboard into undergraduate theory classrooms provides a tangible representation of music theory and aural skills. When students hear and feel theoretical concepts at the piano, they engage in meaningful application of theory.

Many piano method books provide creative activities including improvisation, composition, harmonization and transposition, in addition to repertoire, technique and theory skills. Independent piano teachers need to know where to find supplemental materials for these activities.

Forming the Habit: A Case Study of Effective Practice in Group Piano I

Presented at MTNA 2019 Conference

Although instructors report teaching students how to practice, first0year music majors may be unsure of how to practice effectively. The purpose of this case study was to investigate the effects of focusing first-semester group piano students’ attention on specific musical problems during practice.
